The first real road that passed through Gorski Kotar, connecting Karlovac with Rijeka, was the Karolina road. It wasn’t at all an easy task for its constructor, Antun Matija Weiss, who was constrained to use unique architectonic solutions. Some of them can be seen even today regardless the fact they are not used anymore. Ride the Weiss Adventure in his honour and experience the construction of the Karolina road through history.
The Weiss Adventure starts in the centre of Fužine. Move towards the Bajer Lake, riding along its bank for 1 km until your reach the crossroads with gravel road on your right side. Here you turn right and climb up 500 m to reach the asphalt, that is, the Karolina road. After another short rise you will go over the pass and enter the Vrata village, a typical mountain village with a long series of houses on both sides of the main road. When exiting the Vrata village, you will face a railway tunnel which other side is the entrance to Belo Selo and “Instructive Karolina’s Mountain Garden” where you can find out everything about Gorski Kotar’s flora and fauna and learn something about growing the forest fruits and, of course, taste some of the products made by “Borovnica” Craft.
From the mountain garden you continue along the Karolina road climbing up to reach the Sleme area after which the road starts to descend. After 500 m, on your right you will see the entrance to the Bukovac Cave in which have been found traces of the prehistoric man and bones of the cave bear. Archeological researches are still carried out in this almost 100 metres long cave. You will need a lamp or a torch to visit the cave as it is not illuminated.
After visiting the Bukovac Cave continue to descend until you reach the croassroads for Mrkopalj where you will turn right to gravel road following the direction to Brestova Draga. After 3.5 km of easy ascent you will reach Brestova Draga where, on the main crossroads in village, you will turn right. After 1.5 km of gravel road you will reach “fajer” – a unique architectonic solution to span the valley. It is about the former timber viaduct with a pretty hard rise from which 13 visible truncated stone pyramids that once were used as foundarions (Ger. Pfaeiler – pillar) for the viaduct itself were preserved. Continue along “fajeri” through the forest trail until you reach the Slavica village where you turn left to Fužine cycling trail called “Gorska vila” (the Mountain Fairy) (num. 9). Ride through a dense fir-tree forest until you reach the asphalt road, that is, until you reach another Fužine’s cycling trail – “Medvjeđa staza” (the Bear Trail) (num. 8). Turn left here and after 300 metres right to the gravel road on which you will soon start to descend towards Lika Field and Our Lady of Snow Shrine. Continue from shrine on asphalt road towards the Lič village. In the very centre you will find the elementary school in which very interesting Etnographic Collection can be found that should not be missed. From the centre of Lič continue 3.5 km through the village to reach Fužine.
