On a cycling excursion Around Risnjak you will meet the main characteristics of one of the oldest national parks in Croatia as well as the only one in which three European beasts found their habitat – wolf, bear and lynx after which the national park and the rocky peak of the same name were named (ris is Croatian name for lynx).
The best starting point for the cycling excursion Around Risnjak is Risnjak NP Guesthouse located in Crni Lug. You can ride your bike through the Leska instructive trail to warm up and then, through the village centre, head in the direction of Gornje Jelenje. Windy and asphalted road will take you to Mrzle Vodice in which two lakes – Mrzlica and Lokva Lake will welcome you. These were created after construction of a dam in Lokve in 1954. Besides that, the Lokve Lake hides the original Lujzijana route, the most modern road of its period that connected Rijeka and Karlovac more than 200 years ago. The only proof of that is the “Emperor’s Bridge” – the old sunken stone bridge on Lujzijana which can be seen only when the water level of Lokve Lake is low. Climb up from the lake through the Mrzle Vodice village towards the Osoj area – one of the most beautiful parts of Lujzijana from which a beautiful view over Risnjak and surrounding hills is spread. By arriving on the main, “old” road Rijeka-Zagreb turn right and on the first crossroads turn right again to the gravel road that slowly climbs up in the direction of Risnjak. After almost 2 km from Gornje Jelenje you will reach the crossroads on which the left road goes towards Platak; here you will turn right following the direction for Vilje and Cajtige. Continue riding for almost 5 km until you reach Vilje where a parking lot for hikers who want to climb the Risnjak peak is located. Then turn left and ride under Vilje rocks and Risnjak peak which can be seen on your right side and then another 5 km over the highest point of the route, Cajtig, to reach the beautiful Lazac meadow on which the mountain hut and rest area are located.
From Lasac you continue another 5 km through Veliki Cirkul until you reach Lividraga where a beautiful lawn with dominant “Lividraga” Hunting Lodge is located. The lodge offers recreational outdoor facilities as well as accommodation and boards upon prior notice. It is worth mentioning that even Tito spent his freetime in Lividraga. Continue from Lividraga through asphalt road towards Gerovo. After passing the plain part of the route, and before the road starts to descend, on your right side you will notice a belvedere that must not be ignored. You will enjoy a beautiful view over Gerovo and close hills that are rising over the Kupa Valley. After sightseeing, continue descending through serpentines until you reach Gerovo and the main road Tršće – Crni Lug where you turn right. From Gerovo there is an easy, 9 km long rise through the area of Gerovo to the Vršić crossroads after which the road starts to descend towards Malo Selo. There is another 1.5 km from Malo Selo to Crni Lug.
