Besides the attractive soil configuration, another excellent characteristic of Gorski Kotar is its closeness to the sea. Such advantage is particularly felt during summer months when you can escape from the hot seaside areas and refresh yourselves at the fresh mountain air, only few chilometres away. How close Gorski kotar really is to the sea find out during your cycling excursion called “A Step From the Mountains, Two From the Sea” which will take you through some of the most beautiful belvederes over the Kvarner Bay.
Start in the centre of Fužine through the Karolina road in the Zlobin direction. From the very beginning you climb up through Donji and Gornji Benkovac Fužinski all up to Zlobin hill after which, as reward for successfully ridden ascent, the road descends through Zlobin all down to Plas. In this part you will pass even twice the Rijeka – Zagreb railway. In the Plase village, just 1 km after passing the railroad, you will reach the crossroads on your left and then turn left.
Continue to ride on the asphalt road that will lead you along the Vinodol ridge itself. Almost along the whole way beuatiful views over the Kvarner Bay will continue to appear. At some 7 km from Plase you will reach the Razromir pass on which the Mahavica belvedere is located, one of the six arranged belvederes of the “Eyes of Vinodol”. From the Mahavica belvedere, the view is really impressive – on the north side a stone conical peak of Medviđak is raised, on the west side the beutiful mountain Razromir meadows coloured with stone blocks spread, on south-western side the Učka mountain massif as well as Kvarner Bay coloured with islands of Krk, Cres, Rab and Pag bordered by the Velebit massif.
Continue your ride from Mahavica belvedere through the asphalt road on which, after 600 m, you will see on your right side paragliding runway. If you are lucky, you will see numerous paragliders who come to fly to Tribalj and fall in love in its magical area and often come back here. Large number of suitable days for flying, optimal difference in height view over sea and hills and easy approach are axcellent arguments for flying in this area. Vinodol ridge is some 20 km long whilst its rocky slopes provide good conditions for flying so that even beginners can enjoy. Turn left on the first crossroads after runway and you will reach another crossroads on the edge of the forest, on which you again turn left. Continue on gravel road through the forest on the long transmission line route ascending towards Drivenik railway station. After almost 3.5 km you will reach the crossroads for Drivenik station located precisely above the railway tunnel and then turn right and ride 500 m until next crossroads on which you turn first right and after 100 metres left. Gravel road continues to descend for another 1.7 km until it reaches the first houses in the Lič village. Immediately after you reach the asphalt road, on your right side will appear plantations of mountain lavender. The Plesničar Agricultural Family Farm takes care of lavender fields and in their home you can taste a number of lavender products (teas, juices, pastries, etc.).
After you have tasted lavender delicacies, continue through the village to reach the centre in which the elementary school is located with very rich and interesting ethnographic collection which must not be missed. Ride some 3.5 km from the Lič centre to reach Fužine.
